Hope the Poor Bastards Can Stay Off-Camera

Eric Alterman was perusing the code of military conduct (our favorite bathroom reading as well!) when he came across DOD Directive 1344.10:
A member on active duty shall not . . . Participate in partisan political management, campaigns, or conventions (unless attending a convention as a spectator when not in uniform).
Under the circumstances, one has to wonder why the Republicans are bragging that 144 of the delegates at the convention -- three percent of the total -- are active-duty military personnel. You'd think their commander-in-chief would have the common courtesy to hush it up, if only to keep the poor guys' asses out of the brig (not that he's shown much concern for military regulations -- or military personnel -- in the past).

If you're watching the coverage over the next few nights and the cameras happen to catch a squad of MP's elbowing their way through the crowds on the convention floor, you'll know what it means: another hapless soldier has been caught campaigning for Bush.
