Courtesy of Suburban Guerrilla: Nicholas Turse of the Village Voice examined newly-declassified military records in the National Archives and discovered that the "discredited" atrocities John Kerry catalogued in the course of the Winter Soldier investigation --
They told stories that at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in a fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam, in addition to the normal ravage of war and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country.-- were all extensively documented in the files of contemporaneous military investigations. Unsurprisingly, the scurrilous claims by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth --
None of the Winter Soldier 'witnesses' Kerry cited in his Senate testimony less than three months later were willing to sign affidavits, and their gruesome stories lacked the names, dates, and places that would allow their claims to be tested. Few were willing to cooperate with military investigators.-- turn out to be wrong in every particular.
