Repressed Memory 

We found ourselves scratching our heads in puzzlement just now when the special Politics Issue of the New Yorker tumbled out of the imperial mailsack:

Eventually we got the reference -- but really, what does this cover image have to do with American politics? We just watched four nationally-televised debates without hearing so much as a glancing reference to torture, or that place -- what was the name again? --"Abu Ghraib."

Frankly, we're not sure any of it ever happened. And even if it did, polite people wouldn't bring it up.
