Oddly Enough, the Exact Same Speech Was a Smash Hit at the Heritage Foundation

The good (we say good; we do not say bright) people of the commonwealth of Virginia were at a loss to imagine how they might top the self-inflicted humiliation of electing John Cosgrove to public office -- until some genius noticed that the traveling rodeo needed a singer to perform the national anthem, and had the brilliant inspiration of booking Ali G:
British comedian Sasha Baron Cohen escaped a near-riot at an American rodeo while filming his satirical “Da Ali G Show.”

According to a report in the Roanoke (Virginia) Times, a man who was introduced as Boraq Sagdiyev from Kazakhstan — in reality a Cohen character named Borat — appeared at the rodeo over the weekend after organizers agreed to have him sing the national anthem.

After telling the crowd he supported America’s war on terrorism, he said, “I hope you kill every man, woman and child in Iraq, down to the lizards ... And may George W. Bush drink the blood of every man, woman and child in Iraq.” He then sang a garbled version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” . . . .

“Had we not gotten them out of there, there would have been a riot,” rodeo producer Bobby Rowe told the paper. “They loaded up the van and they screeched out of there.”

It is not the first time Cohen has wooed controversy with his show, which airs on HBO. In one episode last year, Borat sang an anti-Semitic song called “Throw the Jew Down the Well” at a country music bar, prompting protests from the Anti-Defamation League.
As a matter of principle we are still refusing to link to FucktheSouth.com, but take our advice: if you are feeling the urge to condescend you may satisfy it by visiting the Roanoke.com message boards, where a full-blown culture war has erupted between the bewildered locals and an international Coalition of the Illin'. A few highlights:
If this Fool doesn't work for HBO they should go after him! HBO support this Fool the whole Roanoke Valley should drop HBO until they make a statement. We need to do this for the respect for men & ladies in our military and the kids that wittiness this fool.

Interesting statistic: in some states of the southern USA an impressive 75% of the population is functionally literate. That's quite some achievement - almost as good as China, at 90%.

I don't care if was a joke or not, that was awful what that man did. I hate it when people insult this country, even if it's in joke. I hate it and still hate it when people criticize Clinton for his "I did not inhale" and the Lewinsky thing, and I hate it when they criticize Bush for the war, EVEN IN JOKING. It's NOT funny, and it shouldn't be done. Don't you people think that other countires are laughing their ASSES off at us because of how we insult our leadres and our country? It doesn't make sense, it makes me VERY angry, and before you reply to my posting you just might want to know that I am NOT a gun toatin, pick up truck drivin, dumbass redneck....I am a northerner from MI, so I am not saying any of this because I am a redneck. People who make jokes about our country and ANY of our leaders need to be censored and silenced, and their content does not neet to be allowed on TV, radio, in newspapers, or in any other media. How can any other country have respect for us when we bash ourselves like that? That's insane and it makes me UNproud to be an American. No wonder so many countries hate us. We're nothing but a joke to them because that's what we make ourselves out to be. People like this "Ali G" need to be silenced. What about freedom of speech, you say? Why do they bleep out cusswords on the radio? Because it's not appropriate. Why do they refrain from using the "f" word on TV? Because it's not appropriate. Why do they put censor bars on naked parts? Becaues it's not appropriate. Some things are just not appropriate to be broadcasted out on the media, and content like "Ali G's" is something that should ALWAYS be silenced and not allowed, just like cusswords are bleeped on the radio. I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but this kind of behavior is not acceptable, and if you think it is, then you should take that "Proud to be an American" bumper sticker off your SUV.

It was the simple minded, gun toten, God fearin, flag waivin, country folk that first fought to establish this country and guarantee the freedoms that we have. Perhaps you should consider who you mock before you show your true colors and allegiances.

and one of those freedoms is that of free speech

learn to take a joke

also, remember that smart, educated, civil and humane people stepped in and had to put you gun totin' flag wavin' simpletons in your place just a few years later in something called the civil war ... blue states won it before and we can again
