Love That Guckert

We have so far neglected the story because AmericaBlog and Atrios have been covering it in such impressive detail, but we thought it would be derelict of us not to mention that "Jeff Gannon," the pseudonymous (real name J.D. Guckert) "reporter" (whose entire journalistic training consists of attending a two-day seminar) for the "Talon News Agency" (a GOPUSA-affiliated website whose content is provided by "volunteer reporters") -- the same Jeff Gannon -- has resigned.

As John Aravosis of AmericaBlog put it:
Just imagine if some guy with alleged ties to male prostitution were given unprecendented access to the White House, and given a White House press pass that didn't even have his real name on it, in order to throw fake softball questions at the press briefings to help make the president look good.

Now imagine that president were named Bill Clinton.

Now imagine what would happen next.
At the very least we'd be hearing howls of outrage from legions of congresspeople -- not just Rep. Louise Slaughter of the House Rules Committee.

MEMO TO KARL AND/OR SCOTTY: If you don't know what to do with that extra press pass, just make it out to "Simbaud, King of Zembla." And yes, that is our real name -- why do you ask?

RELATED QUERY: Just by the way, who paid J.D.'s salary? And how much was he pulling down?

UPDATE: From Oliver Willis:
So let us get this straight: The top Democrat in the Senate loses a race where the GOP sets up a phony blog that passes along news reports from a pseudo media organization, written by a reporter given White House credentials under a fake name.
UPDATE II (via our distinguished colleague Susan Madrak of Suburban Guerrilla): Daily Kos diarist Susan G has posted a long Q&A with former ambassador Joseph Wilson, who was interviewed by Guckert/"Gannon" in 2003 regarding his wife, Valerie Plame, and the Niger yellowcake story.
