Stick or Carrot?

Most of the commentators we've read seem to assume that Doug Wead, who released the old tapes of his private conversations with George Bush, subsequently repented his indiscretion because he woke up with a horse's head in his bed.

The revelations in the tapes were minimally damaging to Bush, and for the most part barely even controversial: he smoked dope, doesn't really hate gay people, etc. Remember, however, that there were many, many hours of tape the public didn't get to hear -- and never will, now that Wead has graciously donated his "historical" recordings to the White House.

So we can't help but wonder: did Wead undergo a sudden change of heart because someone frightened him? Or because someone in a position of weakness had to buy him off?
