2/23 Scale

As you are no doubt already aware, the number of American troops killed in the so-called "war on terror" now exceeds the number of American civilians killed on 9/11.

A new and hotly-debated article in the British medical journal The Lancet estimates that 655,000 Iraqis have died as a direct or indirect consequence of the American invasion and occupation of Iraq.

The population of Iraq is roughly 26 million; that of the U.S., 300 million. Assuming that the Lancet figures are correct, how many Americans would have to die to match the Iraqi death toll, expressed as a percentage of total population?

A) everyone in Los Angeles, CA;
B) everyone in Los Angeles, CA, and Chicago, IL;
C) everyone in New Jersey;
D) everyone in Virginia and the District of Columbia;
E) everyone in Iowa, Arkansas, and Nebraska.
